A: High risk populations include individuals who:

  • are over 40 and use tobacco of any type: smokeless, cigars, cigarettes, and pipes
  • frequent use or abuse of alcohol
  • have a personal or family history of cancer, especially oral cancer
  • have a compromised immune system, such as HIV infection
  • chronic exposure to any carcinogen
  • solar radiation exposure
  • have ill-fitting oral appliances or dentures
