A: High risk populations include individuals who:
- are over 40 and use tobacco of any type: smokeless, cigars, cigarettes, and pipes
- frequent use or abuse of alcohol
- have a personal or family history of cancer, especially oral cancer
- have a compromised immune system, such as HIV infection
- chronic exposure to any carcinogen
- solar radiation exposure
- have ill-fitting oral appliances or dentures
